“Run by former heart patients for the support of heart patients and their carers”

Reg. Charity No. 1126524

Sunderland Cardiac Support Group was formed in 1993 by six heart patients, who met in a small room in Sunderland Royal Hospital. Once a month they felt the need for, themselves and their carers, to discuss and talk through their concerns and fears. As the Group grew in numbers and with the support of a cardiac nurse, it was realised that this was a valuable part of their physical and emotional healing.

Our main aim is to help rehabilitate whilst still supporting group members.

We enjoy numerous social gatherings, arrange medical and social speakers, meet monthly, organise bus trips, dances, walks. etc.

The icing on the cake has been the success of the exercise class which started September 1998. We hold six exercise sessions every week with between 20 to 30 members attending each session.

The group is very proud of their success in supporting and encouraging, where possible, cardiac patients to look forward to a new lease of life.

The group won the “Pride of Wearside Community Group of The Year” award (2009)

The group also came runner up in the ”Cornerstone of the Community’ award ” Community Group category (2012)
