The Sunderland Cardiac Support Group is a registered charity run entirely by volunteers dedicated to providing help and support to the people of Sunderland and the surrounding districts, who have or have suffered from some form of cardiac trauma and their partners or carers.

Members have access to Phase IV exercise sessions and social activities.
We also incorporate “Active at 60” which was developed to help anyone aged 60 or over wishing to improve their health and well being by making full use of the services we provide.

We first came together as a small group in 1993 and have been supporting each other ever since.
We are a member of the BHF Independent Group Network, one of over 120 support groups. You may like to visit the BHF Support Group page and watch a short video about the activities of a typical support group youtube video link.

Cardiac rehab is a vital part of your recovery and it’s just as important as taking your medicines.
Research has shown that cardiac rehab can reduce your risk of having another heart event or being readmitted to hospital.
It also has a positive impact on your wellbeing and quality of life.

Cardiac rehab can help you with:
Recovering from your surgery, procedure or heart attack
Reducing the risk of further heart problems
Improving your mental health and wellbeing
Meeting other people who are in a similar situation as yourself
  Returning to work.

Exercise
The group exercises are done in a relaxed atmosphere and at your own pace, and are structured to suit individual needs and ability.
Our sessions are run by qualified fitness trainers.

The sports hall is equipped with a wide range of exercise equipment.
Come and join us for a FREE taster session.
During our sessions you’ll exercise at a moderate level.
Moderate exercise means you are slightly short of breath,
but you can carry on a conversation.

The exercise session are split into three sections:
A warm-up to prepare your body and heart for exercise.
A main exercise or conditioning period to improve your fitness and heart health.
A cool-down to help your heart rate and breathing get back to your normal level.

The group exercises are usually held on weekday mornings, and these are lead by qualified fitness instructors.
The sessions are currently provided FREE of charge to members.
Don’t worry if feel nervous about exercising, this is completely normal.
Our team will be there to support you.
